The Silver Dollar Club

Est. 1950

Who We Are

Kenosha's finest social club

The Silver Dollar Club has been a Kenosha institution since 1950. Thirty-six members. No more, by design. Small enough that everyone knows each other, close enough to actually show up when it counts.

Every member carries a silver dollar. Not a figure of speech. Reach into your pocket and prove it, or you're buying the round.

Friendship

Thirty-six members, by design. You know everyone by their name and what kind of silver dollar they've got in their pocket.

Fellowship

Six parties a year, twelve meetings, and the kind of friendship that doesn't need a reason.

Tradition

The last Tuesday of every month, since 1950. Some things don't need improving.

Our Story

Club History

The Silver Dollar Club has been gathering monthly since 1950. More than seven decades of fellowship, tradition, and the occasional tall tale. What started with a small group of founding members and a cigar box for dues has grown into a club of 36, with customs and camaraderie that have held steady from the very beginning.

1950

The Founding

The club was established in 1950 by approximately 12 founding members, though the exact count is still a matter of friendly debate. Among the names passed down: Clarence "Cuzzy" Keuhl, Otto Stein, John "Smoke John" Johanowicz, and Harv Cecil. The first meetings were held at the German American Club on 52nd Street, the old CYC building on the south side of the street, long since torn down. Some accounts suggest the meetings may have taken place at a tavern on the north side of the street, most recently known as Coins before it too closed.

The Early Traditions

Format & the Silver Dollar Rule

From the very beginning, the format has been what it is today: monthly meetings, with parties every other month including wives. And from day one, only a genuine cartwheel-size silver dollar has been accepted. No Susan B. Anthony dollars, no smaller substitutes. The coin has always meant something.

The dues were modest enough to fit in a cigar box, which is exactly where they were kept. Legend has it that one member made off with the box and fled to Milwaukee. He didn't stay a member long.

Growing the Club

From 24 to 36 Members

The club held at 24 members for many years before expanding, first to 30, and eventually to its current roster of 36. Each expansion was a deliberate decision, keeping the club large enough to thrive but small enough to feel like family.

Honorary Membership

A Special Recognition

The Honorary Member tradition was created for Joe Bella, father of members Steve and Al, when he lost his wife Molly and was approaching 90 years old. No longer able to drive or work a party or lunch committee, the club decided that its eldest members in that situation deserved a place of honor. Joe kept paying dues voluntarily even after it was no longer required. Others who have held Honorary Membership include Eric Olson, Dean Shultz, Jeff Siemion, Tim Carney, and Dave Wente.

Meeting Places

Starlight, Brewmasters & Beyond

For many years the club called the Starlight Club home, where members had dedicated closets for gear and hosted both monthly meetings and parties. Owners John and Helen Powoni were members themselves. A small fire forced a temporary relocation to the old Brewmasters (where Kenosha Brewing Company stands today), and the club eventually returned to Starlight. When new ownership later remodeled and eliminated the club's storage space, it was time to move on. The Knights of Columbus has been home since.
